Established in 1914, AFS Intercultural Programs (AFS) is an international, volunteer driven, non-governmental, non-profit organisation that provides intercultural learning opportunities. A premier educational exchange organisation, AFS is one of the world’s largest community-based volunteer organisations.

Since 1947, when the first student exchanges took place, a similar number of host families have been a part of AFS worldwide. The essence of any AFS program is ‘Stay and Study’ in a different cultural setting. Participants live with a host family experiencing home and family life that is in many ways different to their own culture and routine.AFS activities are based on our core values of dignity, respect for differences, harmony, sensitivity and tolerance. We believe that today’s youth – and tomorrow’s leaders – are among the best “bridge builders” between nations.

Currently, there are more than 36,000 active volunteers worldwide in various roles including board leadership, program operations, participant support and marketing. The volunteer body is generally comprised of program alumni, and their families, former host families and teachers. Volunteers keep the wheels of AFS running.

Every year AFS provides thousands of high school age (15–18 year old) students from all over the world with opportunities to live in another country for an academic year. They learn to appreciate other ways of doing things and begin to break down the barriers between cultures and people. The personal growth and learning for both students and their families is profound and sustained. The families gain extended life-long relationships.

Objective
AFS enables people to act as responsible global citizens working for peace and understanding in a diverse world. It acknowledges that peace is a dynamic concept threatened by injustice, inequity, and intolerance. Intercultural Programs India

AFS is an international, voluntary, non – governmental, non-profit organization that provides intercultural learning opportunities to help people develop the knowledge, skills and understanding needed to create a more just and peaceful world. AFS was created in 1914 and has been doing intercultural programs since 1947, currently present in more than 54 countries with over 13,000 exchanges per year.

The essence of any AFS program is ‘Stay and Study’ in a different cultural setting. Participants live with a host family experiencing home and family life that is in many ways different to their own culture and routine.

The benefits of this intercultural experience are manifold. The participant, the host family, host school, and the community get an opportunity to develop the knowledge, skills and understanding needed to create a more just and peaceful world.

AFS believes that we must build bridges of understanding and mutual respect between countries and cultures around the world. We further believe that today’s youth —and tomorrow’s leaders —are among the best “bridge builders” between nations.

AFS Intercultural Programs India looks forward to strengthening its presence amongst its stakeholders by undertaking local/national initiatives. The programs aims to bring together anyone and everyone who works in international setting, lives or travels abroad, faces issues of diversity in their personal/professional life, or simply seeks to grow through intercultural experiences, an official AFS Intercultural Programs India extravaganza with an array of activities.

Target Audience —AFS Intercultural Programs India stakeholders —Students, Volunteers, Educational Institutions/Boards, Dignitaries, Corporate, Government Officials and Education &Cultural Exchange industry representatives.

Intercultural Education —AFS has always stressed on the need for advocating Intercultural Learning amongst its stakeholder — the need to develop cultural competencies to help individuals adapt in culturally varied setups. Imparting relevant education through workshop, seminars, talks etc. via such a platform could help us brand ourselves amongst a wider audience.

The purpose of AFS programs is to develop effectiveness for those working in international environments, encourage cultural and personal self-understanding, and show how to deepen the learning experiences that come from travel and life abroad, an informal yet social extravaganza with an intercultural theme.

Mutthi Bhar Anaaj initiative, under the aegis of the AFS Community Service Program

On November 28, 2024, the students of DPS Rau demonstrated the true spirit of compassion and social responsibility through a heartwarming visit to an old age home as part of the Mutthi Bhar Anaaj initiative, under the aegis of the AFS Community Service Program.

This thoughtful endeavor was designed to bring joy, companionship, and essential support to the elderly residents while fostering a sense of empathy among the students. The visit was marked by meaningful interactions, engaging activities, and a heartfelt exchange of stories that bridged generations.

The students not only organized fun activities to spread cheer but also donated essential goods, symbolizing their commitment to giving back to society. This emotionally enriching experience left a profound impact on both the students and the elderly residents, reinforcing the values of kindness, respect, and community service.

Through initiatives like this, DPS Rau continues to nurture socially conscious and compassionate individuals who are eager to make a positive difference in the world.

Engaging with the Elderly:

This heartwarming visit showcased a beautiful blend of generations coming together to share, learn, and celebrate life. Beginning with engaging conversations, the students immersed themselves in the treasure trove of stories and life lessons from the elderly residents. These exchanges bridged the gap between generations and built a connection grounded in empathy and understanding.

The day unfolded with vibrant activities that lit up the atmosphere. The spirited game of Antakshari resonated with nostalgia as the seniors enthusiastically revisited songs from their youth. Their laughter and cheerful singing created an ambience of joy, underscoring the power of music to connect hearts across ages.

Adding to the cultural zest, the Garba session turned into a delightful celebration. The rhythmic claps and swirls of this traditional dance infused the space with energy and enthusiasm. Witnessing the elderly, some of whom rediscovered their love for dance, sharing the stage with students was a testament to the enduring vitality of the human spirit. The event wasn’t just a gathering; it was a festival of connection, joy, and shared memories.

A Thoughtful Donation:

The DPS Rau community extended their heartfelt support to the elderly residents of Jagannath Narayan Old Age Home through both emotional connection and tangible contributions. Recognizing the everyday challenges faced by the seniors, students and teachers generously donated essential items, including flour, pulses, rice, sugar, oil, and other staples. These donations were not only vital for the residents’ health and sustenance but also a testament to the community’s commitment to making a difference.

This thoughtful act was met with deep appreciation from the residents and the staff, as it significantly eased some of the logistical challenges faced by the home. Beyond providing for immediate needs, this gesture embodied a profound sense of compassion and solidarity, reflecting the values of care and responsibility championed by DPS Rau.

A Heartfelt Experience:

For the students, the visit was an emotional and transformative experience. Many students reflected on how the day helped them realize the importance of spending time with the elderly and the impact of small acts of kindness. One student shared, “It was humbling to see how much our visit meant to the residents. It made me realize that even simple gestures, like playing a game or dancing together, can brighten someone’s day.”

The elderly residents, in turn, were deeply touched by the attention and care shown by the students. For them, the visit was a reminder that they were not forgotten and that their stories and experiences were valued. The day’s activities filled the home with laughter, joy, and a renewed sense of community, making it a truly unforgettable experience for everyone involved.

Conclusion:

The “Mutthi Bhar Aanj 3.0” initiative at Jagannath Narayan Old Age Home was a heartwarming success, exemplifying the spirit of compassion and service. The visit brought immense joy and a sense of belonging to the elderly residents through meaningful interactions, laughter, and shared moments. The donation of essential items addressed their practical needs, while the engaging activities uplifted their spirits and created an emotional bridge between generations.
